Alsace

Famous for its renowned white grape varieties and German-sounding wine names, Alsace is located in the northeast of France, bordering Germany. The region boasts 15,500 hectares of vineyards but has relatively few appellations (Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru, Crémant d’Alsace). Prominent grape varieties include Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Muscat, and Sylvaner.

Beaujolais

You’ve heard of Beaujolais Nouveau, but let’s talk about Beaujolais in general. Beaujolais Nouveau is just one wine among many in this extensive region with 12 appellations (Brouilly, Morgon, Saint-Amour, etc.), covering 21,000 hectares. The primary grape variety is Gamay, making up 98% of the region’s vineyards.

Bordeaux

Apart from being known for its cannelés and Alain Juppé, Bordeaux is also a prestigious wine region. Its vast vineyards span 119,000 hectares and include around sixty appellations (such as Médoc, Graves, Saint-Émilion). Bordeaux wines are made from a variety of grapes including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle.

Burgundy

Fancy some escargot and a glass of Pinot Noir? Burgundy is a region where traditions are deeply rooted. Covering 50,000 hectares, this central-eastern region features about a hundred appellations (Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits, etc.) and is the most complex wine region in France. Burgundy wines are produced from four main grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Gamay for reds, Chardonnay and Aligoté for whites.

Champagne

Known for its coronations, Reims is also famous for Champagne, the royal wine! The prestigious Champagne vineyard spans 35,000 hectares and has a single appellation. The region’s sparkling and highly refined wines are predominantly made from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier.

Corsica

In addition to its stunning landscapes, maquis, and chestnuts, Corsica has a vineyard that covers 7,000 hectares. The region has 9 appellations (Ajaccio, Calvi, Sartène, Figari, etc.) and cultivates Mediterranean grape varieties that suggest a journey: Sciaccarellu, Niellucciu, Vermentinu.

Jura

Have you seen those uniquely shaped bottles that look like large perfume flacons against a mountainous backdrop? Welcome to Jura ! With 2,000 hectares, it is the smallest wine region but not the least significant. Its wines, including the renowned Vin Jaune and Vin de Paille, are made from various grapes like Poulsard, Trousseau, Pinot Noir, Savagnin, and Chardonnay.

Languedoc-Roussillon

From the arenas of Nîmes to the ramparts of Carcassonne, there’s much to do in Languedoc. And why not enjoy a good wine while you’re at it? Languedoc-Roussillon is the largest wine region, with over 220,000 hectares of vineyards and numerous appellations. Key grape varieties include Grenache, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre.

Provence

It’s impossible to talk about Provence without mentioning rosé, as it is the world’s leading rosé-producing region! However, the 9 appellations in this southeast region, as large as Burgundy (27,000 hectares), also produce white wines, with the famous Cassis blanc, and red wines like Côtes de Provence. Major grape varieties include Vermentino, Clairette, Ugni Blanc (rosé), Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan (reds).

Savoie-Bugey

Thinking of spending Christmas in Savoie this year? Ski by day, fondue by night, and wine to warm you up... what could be better? This small wine region in the center-east, covering 3,000 hectares and 6 appellations, grows 23 grape varieties, including Jacquère, Roussanne, and Mondeuse.

South-West

Whether you prefer a beret or Espelette pepper, magret de canard or sheep cheese from Itxassou, the South-West region offers more than just waves, surfing, or local delicacies. It also has a wine region covering 33,000 hectares and 18 appellations. Notable grape varieties include Tannat, Négrette, Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, Malbec, and Mauzac.

Loire Valley

The Loire Valley is famous for its châteaux and cycling routes. Like the river it’s named after, this wine region is one of the largest, with 70,000 hectares of vineyards and 69 appellations. As the leading producer of white wines, it also makes red and sparkling wines from a variety of grapes including Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Melon de Bourgogne.

Rhône Valley

You might know the Palais des Papes and perhaps (or perhaps not) the AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape. What do they have in common, aside from their papal connection? They are both located in the Rhône Valley, which has 75,600 hectares of vineyards. The region’s key grape varieties include Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault (reds), and Marsanne, Roussanne, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, and Viognier (whites).
