Saint-Émilion: What Makes This AOC Unique?

The Saint-Émilion appellation resonates in the imagination of many. Even a wine novice is likely to have heard of this prestigious name.

Within the famous Bordeaux region, the Saint-Émilion AOC is renowned for producing exceptional red wines. Its popularity extends beyond the wine world, particularly since this appellation was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But do you know why this small village is so popular? What are the unique characteristics of the Saint-Émilion terroir that allow it to produce such renowned wines?

Saint-Émilion: A History Rooted in Viticulture

The story begins with the connection between Émilion and Saint-Émilion. Émilion was a Breton in the 8th century. Employed by the Count of Vannes, he was accused of giving too much of the city's treasure to the poor as alms. He fled south and found refuge in a cave in the forest of Cumbis. From this refuge, which he transformed into an oratory to uphold his values, he gained a reputation as a saint and was soon joined by disciples. This cave became the city of Saint-Émilion, and his tomb is now the monolithic church. Viticulture in the region dates back to Roman times. During the Middle Ages, following Saint Émilion's influence, parts of the Cumbis forest were cleared to create vineyards. This marked the beginning of a wine history that Louis XIV famously called the nectar of the gods.

Favorable Conditions for Vine Cultivation

The wine produced in Saint-Émilion inspired King Louis XIV because the terroir combines many favorable qualities. Located between the right bank of the Dordogne and the left bank of the Isle, this vineyard benefits from an ideal oceanic microclimate, tempered by these two rivers. The vines grow on various soils, giving Saint-Émilion wines many characteristics. The areas around the city are situated on limestone plateaus. To the west, there is a vast expanse of silty-clay soils, and towards the south and the Dordogne, clay-limestone or sandy-gravel soils can be found. This environment is perfect for obtaining the best from the main grape varieties grown here: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.

Numerous Grand Cru Classés

In 1954, an agreement was reached with the National Institute of Appellations of Origin for the first classification of wines from this vineyard into Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé, and Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé. To ensure a constant pursuit of the highest quality, this classification is reviewed every 10 years, making it the only French classification to function this way. The latest revision occurred in 2012, marking the tenth update since the creation of the Saint-Émilion classification. This includes 64 Grands Crus Classés and 18 Premiers Grands Crus Classés, showcasing the culture of quality and the strength of the Saint-Émilion terroir.
