WHY BREAK OUT THE CHAMPAGNE ?
Looking to impress your guests at your next meal?
Why not try sabering the champagne? It will add a dramatic flair to your evening. Discover the origin of this tradition and get tips on how to saber your champagne bottle safely in this article.
Sabrer vs. Sabler: What's the Difference?
It’s important not to confuse “sabrer” and “sabler” when it comes to champagne.
- Sabrer refers to the act of opening a champagne bottle using a sword or similar object.
- Sabler means to coat the inside of glasses with a thin layer of sugar to enhance the fizz of the champagne, a technique used in the past when the carbonation was less predictable.
Sabring Champagne: A Military Tradition
The art of sabering champagne dates back to the 19th century and initially appeared among cavalry regiments. To celebrate their victories, Napoleonic soldiers would open champagne bottles using the blade of their sabers. The sharp edge of the saber would cut off the bottle’s top, allowing the pressure inside to propel the cork into the air. This tradition has endured, and today, you can still saber your champagne to mark a significant occasion.
How to Saber a Bottle of Champagne
Although soldiers originally used their sabers to open bottles, you can use other objects to achieve the same effect. A long kitchen knife, the base of a champagne flute, or even a small spoon can work.
Here’s how to do it properly:
-
Chill the Bottle: Keep your champagne well-chilled until you’re ready to open it. Cold champagne makes the glass easier to slice.
-
Hold the Bottle Correctly: Grip the bottle firmly by the base, holding it at an angle of about 45 degrees.
-
Locate the Seam: Find the vertical seam running down the length of the bottle. This is the weakest point and where your knife or object should strike.
-
Make the Cut: With a swift and decisive motion, strike the seam with the edge of your knife or object.
Safety Tips
- Clear the Area: Ensure there are no obstacles or people around you to avoid accidents.
- Protect Yourself: Use a glove or cloth around your hand to guard against any possible glass shards if the bottle shatters.
- Be Prepared for Spills: Have a cloth handy to clean up any champagne that might spill.
Once you’ve mastered the technique, you can enjoy your champagne with a touch of flair.
