Whether Believer or Not, the Tradition of Easter Dinner Remains Strong

The tradition of Easter meals remains deeply ingrained in many families, whether one is a believer or not. If your Easter meal is approaching and you still haven’t chosen the wine, don’t panic! In this guide, you will discover everything you need to know to best complement your Easter lamb and have all the keys to successfully pair food and wine with Easter chocolate.

The Best Food and Wine Pairings with Easter Lamb

Traditionally symbolizing the sacrificial lamb of the Jewish Passover, lamb is the essential dish for any Easter meal! Whether you choose a leg, shoulder, or navarin, this tender and flavorful meat is a favorite for festive menus. Whether roasted, confit, or cooked in a casserole, lamb generally calls for a red wine that balances finesse and character to match its unique flavor and delicate meat.

• For a thyme-infused 7-hour lamb shoulder, opt for a full-bodied and spicy red wine based on Syrah and Mourvèdre, such as those from the Rhône Valley, Languedoc, and Provence. A cuvée from an AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape red, with its notes of ripe fruit and sweet spices, is an excellent choice to accompany this convivial dish.
• If you prefer a roasted leg of lamb served slightly pink, go for a Bordeaux wine with tannins softened by a few years in the cellar. With its aromas of dark fruits, cocoa, and licorice, as well as velvety tannins, Bordeaux wines — from Pauillac to Saint-Émilion — remain reliable choices to complement a leg of lamb dish.
• Finally, if you’re having a lamb navarin, choose a red wine with spicy notes and a warm profile. Red wines from the Languedoc (AOC Saint-Chinian) or the South-West will pair wonderfully with this dish.

What Wine with Easter Chocolate?

While lamb is an iconic dish of our Easter meals, eggs, bunnies, bells, and hens are not to be overlooked! Indeed, while the hunt is — most of the time! — reserved for children, when dessert arrives, chocolate reigns supreme! To delight the most indulgent among us — and if you’re reading this, you’re likely one of them — don’t neglect the food and wine pairing with chocolate.

• To accompany a traditional dark chocolate mousse, opt for a natural sweet red wine from AOC Banyuls or AOC Maury. The texture of the mousse and the character of dark chocolate will pair perfectly with the sweetness and intense notes of candied fruits, cherries, and dried fruits (nuts, hazelnuts).
• For a light and indulgent dessert with white chocolate and exotic fruits, try a late harvest sweet white wine from AOC Alsace Gewurztraminer. With its notes of exotic fruits (lychee, passion fruit) and its balance between sweetness and freshness, you won’t find a better appellation for your white chocolate pairing. For bubble enthusiasts, a demi-sec Champagne blanc de blancs is also a good option.
• Finally, if the menu includes a dessert with milk chocolate and praline, consider a natural sweet wine from AOC Rivesaltes ambré with complex aromas of hazelnut, gingerbread, and candied fruit. A pairing that will surely impress your guests!
