Vignobles Ponty: A Family Legacy

A Rich Family History

Vignobles Ponty is a family-owned estate spanning nearly 13 hectares in the Canon-Fronsac and Bordeaux appellations. With its clay-limestone soils and typical “molasses du Fronsadais,” Vignobles Ponty benefits from an ideal terroir for cultivating Merlot, the flagship grape of wines produced on the right bank of the Bordeaux vineyard. Located just minutes from the prestigious appellations of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, the Canon-Fronsac appellation is increasingly recognized as a key player among Bordeaux’s great wines.

The adventure began in 1905 when Victor Ponty, Hélène’s great-grandfather, left his native Corrèze to pursue his dream of becoming a winemaker. Successive generations have led the estate with the same philosophy: making the right choices rather than the easiest ones to produce wines with a distinct identity, characterized by fruitiness and finesse.

Hélène Ponty: The First Woman at the Helm

Since 2019, Hélène Ponty, the fifth generation, has taken over the reins of the estate, continuing the family values. Upon taking charge, Hélène immediately converted the vineyards to organic farming and conducted biodynamic trials (without certification) to respect biodiversity and soil health. Hélène’s focus is resolutely on the future of the estate. Thus, other grape varieties besides Merlot (which makes up 90% of the vineyard), such as Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and some white varieties, have been planted to introduce more diversity.

Although Hélène is the first woman to lead Vignobles Ponty, women have always played a significant role in the estate’s destiny. For example, Château Grand Renouil, one of the estate’s most beautiful plots, was purchased by Jean Ponty (Hélène’s grandfather) using the dowry from his wife’s family! Additionally, Victor Ponty settled on these lands not only out of love for wine but also for the charming schoolteacher he married!

A Unique Interpretation of Bordeaux Wines

The style of Vignobles Ponty wines is marked by elegance and fruit, never overshadowed by oak. While many Bordeaux wines suffer from overly pronounced woodiness that masks the fruit’s aromas, this is not the case with Vignobles Ponty wines! Here, Merlot expresses all its nuances and finesse across the estate’s various cuvées, such as the Château Grand Renouil cuvée, which is complex and intense, reflecting Bordeaux’s terroir with a strong identity that stands out among other Bordeaux wines. A must-try for Bordeaux enthusiasts!

Hélène Ponty’s first vintage in 2019, just 12 days after taking over the estate, was a resounding success. This provided Hélène with a significant boost of confidence and promises an ever-brighter future for Vignobles Ponty.
