What Wine to Pair with Lobster?

Whether grilled on the barbecue, cooked with lemon butter, or prepared in a rich sauce like Armorican (also known as American sauce), lobster is a choice delicacy that delights us during festive meals. This crustacean, closely related to the lobster, has firm, dense flesh and a subtly iodized flavor. Its delicate and savory taste pairs well with dry white wine. However, to achieve the best wine pairing, consider the sauce or preparation method.

If your lobster is simply grilled or baked with lemon butter, it’s important to choose vibrant and fleshy white wines with saline and mineral notes. Dry white wines from regions like the Loire and Burgundy are ideal for these lobster recipes. On the other hand, if you’re opting for lobster in a rich and powerful Armorican sauce, it’s better to go for a more opulent and full-bodied white wine. Look for certain appellations from the Rhône Valley or Languedoc.

Best Wine Pairings with Lobster

  • For Grilled Lobster: Enjoy a bottle from Burgundy, such as AOC Chablis or AOC Mâcon. These dry white wines, with their aromas of lemon, yellow fruits, white flowers, and refreshing minerality, will enhance the flavors of grilled lobster.

  • For Lobster in Armorican or American Sauce: Opt for a bottle from AOC Saint-Joseph blanc or AOC Roussette de Savoie. These appellations produce floral and opulent white wines with a rich and ample texture in the mouth. This type of white wine is ideal for harmonizing with the rich sauce.

  • For Lobster Baked with Butter: Pair with a dry white wine from the Loire, such as AOC Savennières or Vouvray sec made from Chenin Blanc. These wines are both vibrant and fleshy, with notes of yellow and white fruits (ripe apple, mirabelle) and linden, along with a mineral quality that will beautifully complement your dish.
