Château Livran: A 700-Year Legacy in the Heart of the Médoc

Château Livran boasts a rich history spanning over 700 years in the Médoc region. Surrounded by woods and vineyards, its vast 3000m² estate has been harmoniously shaped over the centuries. The story begins in 1280 with brothers Arnaud and Béraud de Goth, treasurers to the kings of France and England. Arnaud's son, Bertrand, would later become Pope Clement V. The estate passed through the hands of noble families until World War I, when it was converted into a makeshift hospital. During World War II, Château Livran served as the headquarters for resistance fighters. It is said that General de Gaulle spent his last night at the château before departing for England in 1945.

Revitalization and Excellence: The Art of Winemaking at Château Livran

Today, Edwige Lurton Michon, daughter of the renowned Lucien Lurton, and Olivier Michon lead the estate after acquiring it in 2013. Drawn to this remarkable Médoc gem, they are dedicated to rejuvenating the domaine, combining modernity with the traditions passed down from previous generations. Following extensive renovations, including the construction of a new cellar and the purchase of concrete tanks, the Michon family has launched a detailed winemaking program, focusing on the vine's care throughout the year. Their goal is to best express the terroir’s diversity, mastering every aspect of vine cultivation. “If you compare a vine to the human body, it’s essential to allow it to develop harmoniously,” explains Olivier Michon. Committed to sustainability, the Michons harness the domaine’s natural advantages, such as natural temperature regulation and optimized water sources, allowing for more efficient individual plot management. With a strong focus on soil quality and monitoring, they are implementing a gentle soil management system, aimed at eliminating herbicides in the near future. Currently, the estate produces 150,000 bottles annually, with 50% Château Livran cru bourgeois and 50% Sources de Livran (second wine). Benefiting from its typical Médoc terroir of clay-limestone soils and a maritime climate, the estate ensures optimal vine nutrition, promoting excellent grape maturation.
